And swimming through that river, as always, lots of fish. Many ways to swim with my Sunday log, considering the week's events and tonight's red-carpet tribute to the film industry.
My own very small send-up gives Hollywood its due for weathering every economic storm and providing thousands of jobs, from director to grip, for over 100 years.
The film industry has seen us through The Great Depression, episodic recessions, political movements, and revolutions.
Think of all of the supporting industries that have developed out of a need in film production. The obvious: garment and fashion design, accessories and undergarment design, set design and construction, sound and lighting technology. The more obscure: animatronics and robotics, cosmetic surgery (not to be confused with each other), and even architecture.
I am happy to see diversity become the rule of the day, rather than the exception. I remember when seeing a black American on the red carpet was shockingly new. Those of the gay persuasion have always been a part of the scene, but now can be open, and even revered for their contributions to Hollywood, the film industry, and American Culture.
We're also seeing many more older actresses who seem to proudly wear their wrinkles — bless them!
Finally, Tina Fey blushing when Tim Gunn gushed that she 'contributed to the glamour of the Oscars', proves that some in Hollywood don't take themselves *all-that* seriously. That's refreshing and becoming the norm thanks to Ms Fey and many others.
It is an industry, after all, so I guess that makes all actors members of the working class, right?
